Prof. Dr. Mary Yu. Chernyakhovskaya is head of the Intelligent System Laboratory, Institute of Automation & Control Processes of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. She obtained in 1957 a Diploma in medicine at the First Leningrad Medical Institute. In 1968 she received her PhD degree in physiology from the Institute for Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Leningrad, and in 1991 she was awarded a Professor's degree in medical cybernetics at the Institute for Biophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Krasnoyarsk. From 1957-1965 she served as a physician in Yakutiya and Leningrad. From 1965-1973 she was a researcher at the Institute for Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Leningrad. From 1973-1974 she was a lecturer at the Leningrad Sanitary-and Hygienic Institute. In 1974 she was appointed at the Institute for Automation & Control processes of the Far Eastern Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Vladivostok. She has published over 100 journal articles, conference papers and two books in various fields of medicine, physiology and application of AI methods in medicine. Her book Knowledge Representation in Expert Systems for Medical Diagnostics (1983) was one of the first attempts to describe formally an ontology of medicine. She is involved in a research project of the Russian Fund of Fundamental Investigations. Her research interests include studying medical ontology and medical knowledge, medical KBS and medical computer trainers.
