The subject of the discussion is the problem of multiple partial discharges (PD) in high voltage equipment insulation. It is declared PD set has a double character. First, PD multiplicity can be connected with the few defects in the HV insulation active space. At the other hand, it connects with a set of PD occurs in the solitary insulation defect as a PD source. The International standard IEC 60270:2000 and other national standards declare methods of measurement of partial discharges and ignore the problem about the multiple PD sources as potential defects. From point of view of the “apparent charge” conception, it's impossible to learn this problem. The problem of generating the PD sequence by any PD source is considered in the context of learning the integral pattern of the PD. The question about the number of PD sources which initiate this PD integral pattern is investigated. It is shown, the way of the investigation of the set of the PD pulse instants can clarify the problem. The problem of distinguishing of the set of defects in insulation on the basis of the set of generated PD is formulated and solved. An illustrative example is shown. © Technical University of Košice 2019.
