The subject of discussion is the methodological aspects of the study of partial discharges (PD) in high-voltage equipment and the problem of multiple PD. International standard IEC 60270:2000 and a number of national standards declare methods of measurement of partial discharges and ignore the question about the PD sources as potential defects. When comprehending the integral pattern of the PD, the question about the number of PD sources which initiates this complex picture arises. The problems of generating the PD sequence by the source are considered. The problem of distinguishing the set of defects in insulation on the basis of the set of PD generated by these defects is formulated and solved. It is formulated necessity to develop proposals for amendments to the mentioned IEC standards.
